One of the most innovative approaches to minimalist living is the capsule or micro-home. Imagine spending only the amount of space needed for what you need in your life and nothing more. Founder of Minimalism Ikea founder Ingvar Kamprad is considered by many to be the father of the modern minimalist movement. With his declaration that “Less is More” in the 1960s, Kamprad ushered in a new lifestyle, popularized through his popular furniture brand. Today, the minimalist movement is celebrated by a variety of artists and designers, including Andy Warhol, who said, “Minimalism is not the only way to be interesting, but it’s the most interesting.” Perhaps the most well-known minimalist is Danish architect and author Bjarke Ingels. He famously designed the residential tower in New York City’s Hudson Yards, developed by Related Companies, which was hailed as a “statement about cities” and is designed to have minimal impact on the surrounding community. His “Bjarke Ingels Group” designed structures range from massive city blocks, to the miniscule capsule home, and, of course, the Danish apartment. The Limitless Possibilities Using the micro-home concept, the smallest of spaces can be just as innovative as the largest. The 1,000-square-foot micro-home, known as the Tipi, was created by architect James Howard in 2009 and is registered as a “nonprofit architecture museum.” This micro-home was built using only an IKEA tent and is designed as a temporary home to bring the joy of camping to those who live in a city.
